You should get a new set of tires if the tread on your current ones is more than half worn. The reason for this is straightforward: at 50% tread wear, the side between the checkers on the rubber's edges is the same height as the main tread, preventing the removal of water and snow from the contact patch. That's why I flew into the oncoming lane at 50 miles per hour (thankfully empty) the second time I made a tiny 20-degree turn in wet porridge, and once when I taxied the wheel on the kerb at 30 miles per hour. I drove through the same mess, at considerably faster speeds (like on rails), in the second car with the same tread wear as hack 7. Consider this in making your decision.
