Review on 🎨 Unpainted Wooden Russian Nesting Dolls by BestPysanky by Brian Carrizales

Fun craft idea but less ideal for miniatures

I bought this item from the BestPysanky seller. Finish: The dolls are not primed, so you need to prepare gesso or white paint if you want to paint on it. The dolls are slightly ribbed with lines around the perimeter (like on a potter's wheel) which can be overpowering if you're painting a miniature. When you're done painting it's a good idea to use a lacquer finish as it works and looks brilliantly smooth and appealing. The insides of the dolls are rough (think splinters) with wood chips still on the bottom so they need to be cleaned first. Size/Shape: The curvature of the dolls is the same as in the photo. I bought this item because I liked that the shape of the dolls has large drawing areas but is gently rounded. There is enough difference in size between the dolls that you can feel each doll rattle/fall into the larger one, especially vertically when you turn them upside down. The size difference is greatest between the largest and second largest doll, as if a doll size could fit in between. Thankfully, the doll lids themselves close tightly. They close so tightly that it is difficult to rotate around the lids when closed to align them. The largest doll has a wider base to stand on, the others are like bowling pins (except they're a lot lighter!) and can fall over if disturbed. The largest size of the doll is somewhat similar to a water bottle, but wider and shorter; The smallest doll is like a 2.5 cm peanut. Quality: I'm not entirely sure about the quality assurance of this product as I ordered 2 of these sets and the largest doll from one of them appears to be made from a piece of wood containing a tree knot so it has been blackened head and physically shredded Holes and grooves from the knot. I used lots of layers of paint and varnish to smooth out these areas as I painted, but I didn't feel comfortable using the knotted doll to give someone else a gift (I already had a design in mind), just for personal use. . The deformed holes are still there afterwards.

Pros
  • It's OK!
