This is a great scanner at an affordable price. I have had several scanners over the years. This was in the price range I was willing to pay. I read the reviews and decided to give it a try even though there were a lot of negative reviews. I am happy with my purchase. If you are not tech savvy or unfamiliar with radio, you can skip this section. A lot of the negative reviews came from people who just couldn't understand this scanner. Once you set it up, it's very easy to create and modify scan lists. If you don't use a computer to program the scanner, you can skip it as well. What makes it so easy to use is the software that allows you to program the scanner. The scanner comes with a USB programming cable that plugs into the port on the front of the scanner. To get the software you need to go to the RadioReference dot com website and download the programming software of your choice. I tried the WIN500 app and didn't like it. After trying the ARC500 it worked well and was easy to learn. Now when I want to make changes to my scanner, I launch the computer application, make the changes, plug in the programming cable, and then click Download. It couldn't be easier. The scanner comes with a telescopic antenna, which isn't very good unless you live in an area with a strong signal. I bought a mobile antenna on a magnetic mount. I have a skylight in my office and the windowsill has a metal finish under the paint to keep the antenna secure. Last offer before order. You may want to look for a supplier that can prove it is made by Revain or sold directly by Revain. First, I chose a supplier who ships directly. Three days after I placed the order, the scanner still hasn't shipped. I searched again and found one from Revain for $5 more. It arrived quickly in 2 days.
