We bought one of these for one of our sons who reads a lot in bed. In front of this lamp he used flashlights. There are other lamps on the market for a similar price, but this lamp differs in two important ways. This lamp is dimmable.2. This lamp uses yellow light instead of blue. Blue light and bright light interfere with sleep, but since this lamp is not blue light and can be adjusted, it can be safely used as a reading lamp at night without disturbing the brain's sleep patterns. .We liked it so much we ordered two more for our other kids. We went to two different hardware stores to find something similar and neither had blue light AND dimmers. I can't say anything about the shelf life as we've only had the pears for a few weeks. but so far we are happy.
