They allow you to use 16 different channels to prevent others from turning on your light, and the receivers can include a remote hot shoe, wired flash (3.5mm and 0.25" tips to match your flash) and trigger your camera (multiple connectors for connecting to your camera's "remote" port). I really love them - the only thing to remember is to TURN THEM OFF when you're done shooting as they tend to eat batteries if you forget. All the problems I had with the 4 kits I bought are due to low batteries. Insert new batteries and everything works great again!
