Not sure what I expected; However, I felt my hair was stronger after using this product. A friend said my hair had gotten darker, but I couldn't tell. So far I've used it twice. It's a fine powder and you can wear a mask while working with it. I used 1/2 cup of powder to 1 cup of water and felt it was enough for my hair. If you have long or very thick hair, you may need more. I think I washed my hair after the first use because it's a messy product and I just felt the need to do it. Big mistake because my hair felt dry despite oil and styling product. I bought bottles of spices and cut the tip off a second time and felt it was a lot easier to control the flow and distribute it evenly throughout the hair. I haven't washed as often as the first time and I can already see the difference because my hair is not dry and still feels hydrated. I recommend applying it to knotted and split ends in the shower.
