As for the spike finders, this thing is HUGE! So I did some demos on half of the drywall area. It has studs, I-beams and trunking with live wires to the switch and outlets. First, you press a button on the device and wait for the "stacked" bars to empty, then it will beep to let you know you're ready to begin. I ran the block on a drywall and it didn't seem to pick up the bolt at all. I went both ways as indicated by the arrows on the display but nothing. After several tries, it finally appeared, but the device showed that the center was actually on the edge of the 2x4. I've done this several times and again it showed the center on the 2x4 edge. I would trust tapping on the wall to more accurately locate the non-hollow spot. Then I put it through a line with live wires, and nothing. I'm assuming the conduit is shielding the wires, but drilling would suck. Either I'm using the device incorrectly or it's a lemon, but not accurate enough in my eyes to trust it. The borrowed Zircom Spike Finder worked better, not perfectly, but much better.
