These Ares are amazing but not compact. The optics are almost identical to the Athlon Midas 8x42. Maybe the smallest is a little lighter. It's a little more convenient to look through them compared to my pair of Midas. I'm not sure what exactly it is. Not enough experience beyond ten meters so I plan to update this review when I have more outdoor experience and a varied experience with them. Thing is, they're huge compared to other 8x42s I've tried lately. But they are surprisingly clear. The tubes are so large that I (with medium to large gloved hand) find it difficult to grab and hold them. Like the Midas 8x42, they're in a completely different size category, so you might want to go for the smaller ones. I'm having a hard time convincing myself to leave this couple as they are so tall. I compared Athlon Midas 8x42. last weekend a pair of Swarovski 8x42 for $1,800. The only benefit I could find on Swarovski was that they were a bit lighter. As these Athlon Ares 8x42s are visually equal or better than the Midase in every way, I can confidently say that these Athlon Ares 8x42s with Swarovski Glass will fetch four or more times their retail price!
