It would appear that all newly released Seagate products with a "004" in their model number employ shingled magnetic recording (SMR). When data that has already been recorded needs to be additionally overwritten, a delay may be incurred during this form of recording. However, an expanded cache should be able to compensate for this delay. In just under a day's time, almost 4 terabytes' worth of data was recorded for me. Throughout its history, SMR technology has been implemented in disks that are used to store archives. This is a model that I would recommend to friends, but not without some reservations. The following is the maximum allowable workload for Seagate product lines: maximum of 55 terabytes per year for BARRACUDA Compute and FIRECUDA Compute maximum of 180 terabytes per year for IRONWOLF NAS and SKYHAWK Surveillance that does not exceed 300 TB per year: BARRACUDA PRO Compute and IRONWOLF PRO NAS. As a point of comparison, there is a series of corporate drives called WD Gold TM. It is projected that the load can reach up to 550 Tb every year.
