Review on AOC C24G1: Ultra-Smooth 144Hz Frameless DisplayPort Monitor with Height, Pivot, and Tilt Adjustments by Curtis Osguthorpe

Great monitor but returned due to a problem

I really liked this monitor when I had it, but I had to return it just in case the only issue I had was caused by a faulty unit. The VA panel is bright with excellent contrast. It suffered from VA glow like most, and while I'm used to it from my Samsung TV, it was distracting in darker games like Metro 2033. Incidentally, while the contrast adds depth to dark scenes, fast motion caused blur. and after. These aren't terrible '90s LCD screens, but they're there. If you appreciate the richness of the picture and not the clarity of the movement, you will be happy. This was my first 144Hz monitor and it won't be my last. Gaming in excess of 100 fps was a revelation. Working with an old 22" 1080p 60Hz IPS monitor, I didn't realize that this was a performance bottleneck. Now that I'm back on that 22 inch monitor, I get it. It was also my first FreeSync monitor and was the reason I had to return the display. I bought this monitor after NVIDIA released their drivers to enable G-Sync for FreeSync monitors. On the surface it works. Above 80 fps is perfect. However, my monitor suffered from significant brightness flickering. It wasn't the same as a random black frame bursting into the scene. It was more like a candlelight game; The screen brightness flickered quickly in certain situations. Anything locked at 60fps (game menus, fixed framerate games, etc.) was the worst culprit, but I've encountered this issue with games that were in the 50-80fps range. I returned this monitor after consulting AOC customer service. Hopefully this isn't an issue for anyone, but if it is, I've since found several posts online describing a similar issue with other VA FreeSync monitors and possible fixes. We wish you good luck. If you want an affordable 1080p 144Hz display and hate the idea of having to be perfectly centered in front of a TN panel to get an acceptable picture, then you'll probably love this monitor. Just be aware of possible problems with FreeSync.
