Premium Long Life Cycling Rim Tape

I ordered this rim tape because I am re-treading tires (27" x 1-1/4" tires) on my old road bike. I won't go tubeless, but this is high quality, durable rim tape made from rot-resistant vinyl, not rubber. Photo 3 shows the product: a roll of 29mm wide rim tape with a cardboard box [scissors not included]. You clean the rim (in my case wipe it repeatedly with a dry paper towel) and then start applying rim tape 2 inches from the valve stem hole: you need a double layer of tape over the valve stem hole. The headband has the stiffness of good packing tape and isn't particularly sticky but sticks to itself well. You work your way around the rim by unwinding the rim tape and pressing the center of the tape into the center of the rim between the spokes and then press on the edges. This is more of a hassle than it looks because if the tape isn't in the center you'll have to peel the tape off (no problem) and then reattach the area. Photo 2 shows the spool of rim tape when I have the tape almost wrapped around the rim. You want the 4 inch tape to overlap in the center of the valve stem bore; Photo 1 shows a section of tape in preparation for finishing. Now work around the brim several times, sliding the headband into the slits in the brim; Luckily the tape was well centered so I didn't have to peel and glue again. Finally, clean the valve stem hole in the rim: Using a pocket knife, I cut an X-shaped tape in the valve stem hole, then I tried to use the pocket knife blade to pry the pieces of tape out of the hole. In the end I carefully removed the adhesive strips from the valve stem bore with a round file: problem solved!
