The gear indicator on my 1997 Ford F150 Lariat stopped working. Found the small plastic bracket that bolts to the steering box under the dash and holds the steering cable and dial was broken - see photo. Luckily, this repair can be done without having to remove any of the fairings to gain access to the strut. All you need is a 7/32" socket wrench and the ability to bend to get your hands under the dash while lying on your back. An assistant holding a lantern wouldn't hurt either. To show where it broke I taped the bracket back and re-glued it to the metal post it was attached to - see photo. The cracks show that the bracket has come loose from a 7/32" mounting screw (not shown). I attached a new bracket to the end of the control cable by placing the adjustment wheel between two plastic pins and then turning the wheel, I threaded the threaded end of the cable through. That's when the most difficult thing is to slide the loop at the end of the cable wire through the metal hook of the shifter mechanism. A NOTICE. You have to put the shifter in 1st gear to see and reach this metal hook. I was able to place the end of the loop on the outside edge of the hook and then, just by feeling, with two fingers, slide the end of the loop up and through the end of the hook. I then slid the strut over the mounting stud and secured it with a 7/32" hex head screw - see photo. A few turns of the dial was enough to align my gear indicator needle with the letters below the pointer as shown in the attached photo. Easy Repair but cost $12.29 for a dime molded plastic In order not to do it again I plan to remove the brace and reinforce the weak points with JBWeld KwikWeld You should consider so something to do when you need to replace a bracket in your truck.
