Review on ๐Ÿงญ Ultimate Exploration: Magellan GPS Blazer12 Waterproof Hiking GPS Unleashes the Wilderness by Dan Cramer

Okay, but getting the initial ban is difficult.

Thing works pretty well. I got it for free at a car dealership promotion so can't really complain. When traveling I can program latitude/longitude into the device and always reach a waypoint within 0.01 miles. The device is rugged, durable and can withstand a lot of abuse. The battery life is over 10 hours, but it starts to drop sharply after turning on the backlight. The only downside to this device is that it takes a very, very, very, VERY long time to find an initial fix when the batteries die. or removed for more than 20 minutes. It forgets EVERYTHING and needs to be reset. The reset program will boot the system with the default location you set (e.g. US states, Canadian provinces, etc.) and the device will then try to figure out which satellites from the "default" latitude/longitude pre-programmed for that state can be seen . Sounds good. Works bad. For example, I'm in the far southwest corner of Virginia. The only problem is that Virginia's default location is 5 degrees east of me in longitude. This means that the device really cannot see the satellites it thinks it sees. And to make matters worse, I live equidistant from the programmed locations for TN, KY, WV, VA, and NC. Today I put new batteries in mine, plugged in the waypoints I wanted and off I went. After an hour's drive, I arrived at my destination (luckily I didn't need a GPS this time). Still no lock. Then he came home and put the block on the back fence. Two hours later it blocked for the first time. Now it works straight away. All in all not bad for the right price but know what you are getting into beforehand. It's not a device you can stick batteries in and go on a whim.
