The thermostat worked fine for 6 months then I woke up in a cold house and the message 'LOW BATTERY' appeared on the thermostat. I took the thermostat off the wall, charged it via the USB port and hung it back on the wall. It worked, but only for about an hour, and then the low battery message appeared again. I found an article where there is a known software update issue causing this - support was disinterested and didn't offer any help. Now I have a $250 piece of junk hanging on my wall. Since this happened I've found many posts online from people with the same problem. DO NOT order this item if I could give zero stars I would. It's amazing that Nest thinks they can charge $250 for a thermostat that dies in 6 months and people won't get upset.
