I struggled to fit a new part but finally figured it out. For those doing the installation yourself, make sure you jack up the car on both wheels - in other words, the entire front end needs to be lifted to fully stretch the suspension needed to fit the new strut. You may also need to wiggle the underside of the strut to give adequate clearance. Now the shock absorber is installed, it seems to work fine and the ride feels much better.
