I used 6mm and it works great yet is comfortable. I moved the lenses as close to my face as possible and the field of view (FOV) was very good compared to the standard and I didn't notice any loss of light. I haven't tried it with glasses, but I suspect you won't notice any improvement in field of view since the thickness of the face pad isn't the limiting factor in allowing screens to get as close to the eyes as possible.
