Perfect in perfect conditions... Useless in the wind

Okay I'm a city dweller and new to [auto]camping but during my 30 day trip I had a love/hate relationship with the tent. Gimmick for my 2018 Prius IV. CONCLUSION: If you have camping gear on top of the cons and/or for use in ideal conditions, then it totally lives up to your expectations. Otherwise it can be very useless or more frustrating than it's worth. LONG REVIEW: First, my first attempt at using it was in a paddock on the Columbia River, and it did. No. Work. haha even the boy in the van next door came out to say he has no idea what it is but he thinks I'm wasting my time trying to figure it out lol. This thing emptied before the install was even complete and I've been trying for a very long time. Also, the clips were very cheap and some of them broke/torn/ripped when trying. Caution: DO NOT USE IN WIND. This is probably common knowledge to campers who know about wind and tents/tent-like things... but I had a full life and learning experience! I parked after a few days. For this leg of our journey, this jerk was life-affirming. Not only did my pup and I get sick, but it literally rained non-stop for 3 days in a row. So we hardly got out of the car! We'd go nuts in my little Prius (2018 Prius IV) without the extra headroom and airflow provided. *All 3 photos from this leg of the journey*. There is almost no wind so it worked. There weren't any bugs either (still very cold) so I didn't have to worry about it being bug proof - just waterproof. And it was! I was able to stay warm with my bed and dry off with a tarp (may not need a tarp if I didn't have a puppy) and even make myself coffee in the back of the Prius - SO GRATEFUL for this tent and being able to do it like that! As already mentioned, there were no poles for the tent in the kit. Like I said, I'm a total newbie to camping. Soooo I bought some (pretty cheap) poles and unfortunately I couldn't get them to work with the cap. If I found that out, I would be incredibly EXCITED about the extra space the canopy would provide, but having never had one I didn't necessarily miss it. I had high hopes with my YouTube skills that it would work, but no. It's hard to tell if the fault was in the supports I chose, user error, the campsite, or a combination... but using the canopy is a grain of salt :). By the end of my 30 day trip I had fully figured out the quirks of the tent (I used it maybe 9 nights out of 30)... I attached straps to the tire on one side and the back seat door on the other. In the end I only had 2 out of what appeared to be 5 original straps for the bottom of the car, but in the end it turned out to be enough. Since the Prius can leave the air conditioning/heating on all night and uses less than a dollar of gas, I usually kept the tailgate closed at night (and in bear country for obvious reasons), but it was still worth its weight in gold. for me for those 3 rainy, sick nights on the glacier.

Pros
  • Something to it
Cons
  • Minor issues
