If you need to top up coolant every week, check the outlet on the underside of your BMW's radiator. There is a very good chance that after a few hundred thousand miles the o-ring on your temperature sensor will have worn out enough to cause a leak. Do not close the radiator and reservoir caps at the same time. Remove the sensor cable from above. Using long needle nose pliers, grasp the center of the existing edge of the sensor. Press and straighten two ears. There is very little spillage so don't worry about air getting into your system. Insert the new sensor with the handle at the top facing out from the front of the vehicle. Replace thermostat wiring connector. Open the coolant reservoir cap and Phil so the probe is sticking out a few inches. Congratulations, you just saved over $100!
