Where to start. Holes on the sides I don't know what they are for; If you have a cable like mine with screws on each side, you can't screw them into this adapter. This means that when connecting to the computer, the cable is pulled to the adapter, creating a very weak connection to the computer. You can tell it's a problem with my particular configuration, but the main problem with these adapters is that they fall apart. Plugged in for months and never plugged in, the adapter had to be disconnected due to a change in wiring, once disconnected the adapter simply splintered into all the individual pieces that make it up. Terrible, terrible product.
