I bought this camera as my first camcorder and I can't say I'm disappointed. Battery life is decent when not using Nightshot. If you use a memory card instead of a hard drive, it will also last longer. The display is very easy to navigate and very touch sensitive. Overall usability - 5 stars. With a little practice, even a tech-savvy person can make a fairy tale out of it, especially in the "easy" mode, which is activated by pressing a button on the side of the device. The only thing that left us a bit disappointed is the image quality. In HQ mode, the image is a good size but is streak and motion sensitive even with image stabilization. After converting to another, smaller format, it's great for YouTube and other videos. I would never go with him, but he's decent. The snapshot function produces poor quality images, but is good for Facebook or just capturing the moment without having to pull out the camera. I would compare the picture quality to a decent cell phone picture. For example, I've had successful results: recording a quad bike ride in West Virginia, shooting guns aboard a US Navy ship, some videos of my drag strip races, and a few other things. The videos all turned out great. Nightshot is good for close range (20ft max) but useless without an external IR source, otherwise satisfactory. The hard drive is more than adequate in terms of space. Recording starts a bit slower than with flash, but still decent. The lack of a viewfinder wasn't a problem initially, but when I wanted to shoot at night without scattering the light from the screen everywhere, it was quite a struggle. The zoom on this camera is fantastic and the image stabilization really comes into play when shooting at high zoom. I was able to film naval planes flying at high speed from about 3 miles away and ended up with an impressively stable picture and pretty decent quality for a distance like me. Overall I was impressed with the camera but sold it after buying it for a Kodak Zi8 pocket camcorder for almost a year. I just needed something to put in my bag and go. I would recommend this camera to anyone on a budget, teenagers will need it and it will probably be very good for capturing family events and just storing memories.
