Run, run away!

Okay, a little background, I'm an Electronics Engineer, Communications Specialist, Licensed Radio Operator. I'm currently doing my GROL, mostly for naval and aerospace systems. I've been in the industry for over 30 years. So back to this product. do you like tanks I mean like army tanks because this thing is basically built as one. It's much stronger than the box that ships to my door. Delivered politely, the box was squeezed around the corner as if used as a chock. I don't see any physical damage to the device. It weighs as much as a red brick, no joke! This is a very solid heavy black box with switches. Certainly not silent as one might expect given its image mounted under the dashboard on the left side of the steering wheel. In the description, this item is represented by the seller. Hands on, I think a person is more likely to break their knee getting in or out. This is NOT small. This measures an actual width of 9 inches, which is larger than a sheet of standard paper (8.5 ร— 11 inches). It's also nearly 3 inches tall without the mount and closer to 3.75 inches with the mount. And in the seller's description of this device, its depth is 1 inch. That is not right! This unit is 3" deep, 3.5" with switches. This device is not as small as expected. I have a serious problem with the design of this device. This presents a SERIOUS FIRE HAZARD FROM ELECTRIC SHOCK. There are a total of 8 wires coming out of the back of the unit. Each wire exits the block through its own separate hole. This is a serious concern. Each hole is unprimed. There is nothing to prevent the cable from fraying causing a short to chassis ground. If it's properly fused, it's not too much of a problem for a fire. However, the possibility of physical damage to the wires still exists. Also, there's no chance this device is waterproof, let alone durable. It has 8 holes along the back, splashes occur on boats, as does moisture. Even outside of a boat, this can lead to moisture condensation in the system. Not so good in the Midwest or on a boat! Switches can be rated for water ingress but this fails if installed in an unsealed enclosure, all electrical connections are exposed to the environment within the unsealed device. DO NOT place as a life safety device. I specifically call for use at sea because the seller advertises this as a suitable option. It's not like this. I can't install this on my 2003 F-150 as intended. There's just no space big enough to keep it safe. I have a commercial version of this truck so there are no add ons on my dash leaving a lot of dashboard space while at the same time nothing is big enough to securely mount it. I can't imagine trying this on most new cars. I'm going to make a center console for this dash panel and a pair of radios. In general this is a good product. This is an overpriced ALUMINUM BOX. BRACKET STEEL.

Pros
  • surface mounting: with surface-mount housing. The box can be mounted on the dashboard, under the dashboard, the center console or anywhere in the car. The bracket is 360 degrees adjustable. This gives you more editing options.
