Here's my advice on how to get your cat to use it. When it's mealtime, let the cat sniff the bowl and then go to the cat door. If the cat approaches, sniff the food again and then put it in the cat door. My cat didn't mind the door but wouldn't bang his head to open it. First I did it for him, and then I started gently pushing him to do it. It just needs a little push. It was about two weeks before he started going in and out on his own. Edit: I bought it in June 2018. It is now December 2020. It was working great until last night on a wet frosty night. It was frosty and the cat was stuck outside.
