Bought this router to add a 5GHz band and server storage to my setup. It's been a month and so far I see no reason to complain. The download/upload speed is comparable to the speed achieved with a direct connection to the modem. The wireless range in the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands is reasonable and the connection is stable. After unpacking the device, a blue card will greet you at the top that says "Have fun". If you turn the card over, you can see very simple illustrations of how to connect the device. Once this board is removed from the packaging, the router emerges, packaged in a clear plastic bag with clear stickers attached to both sides of the router to protect its glossy black finish from scratches. The ethernet cable and power adapter are already connected out of the box and ready to use. After reviewing the images posted on the "Enjoy" card and entering the required information under the router, I was greeted by the Belkin dashboard, which first checked for a firmware update but couldn't find it. Once that was done, I started looking at the features on the dashboard. The user interface is pretty well thought out and I had no trouble finding and configuring the settings I needed. The first step was to change the SSID and WiFi password. Then I added a password to protect the toolbar. Once settings have been changed, the router will reboot to apply the changes. This behavior mirrors the routers I've used in the past. The next key feature of this router is the server storage, which is provided via the USB 2.0 port on the back. I couldn't find any instructions on how to set this up, and the router's dashboard didn't help either. Most of the links/buttons on the Additional Software tab are broken and do not work. This is because Belkin has configured this page to download these images/buttons from their remote server rather than hard-coding them into the router's firmware. Belkin appears to have removed these images/buttons from their server and hence the problem. I recommend Belkin to remove the Additional Software tab in the next firmware update and direct users to their support page for downloads and manuals instead. The Belkin USB Control Center isn't compatible with macOS Mojave, but that's not a problem as you can use the Finder's Connect to Server feature to access your connected storage. The firmware installed on this router may have bugs from time to time and you will not be able to connect to the attached hard drive. In this case you have to restart your router. Before connecting a hard drive to this router, please make sure the hard drive is formatted in FAT32 and contains only 1 partition. To watch Full HD videos you need a caching capable media player (e.g. mpv or VLC) as the read/write speed of the connected USB drive is limited to 3-6 MB/s (megabytes per second). . Due to the slow read/write speeds of this router to and from a USB drive, I contacted Belkin support. They helped improve these speeds, but eventually concluded that the "theoretical" maximum read/write speed for a USB flash drive is 8 MB/s (megabytes per second). Factors such as interference and the number of devices connected to the router can result in reduced throughput. Aside from the obvious inconsistencies outlined above, I'm quite happy with the router's performance. Internet speed is definitely not enough. Make sure to disable "Intellistream" and set the "Self-healing" option to initialize daily for optimal performance. While it might not be the fastest router available, the Belkin F9K1116 is quite decent. It's also one of the nicest looking routers you'll find at an affordable price.
