For years I kept my knives sharp (probably not dull) with a steel sharpener. I bought two stones, this King KDS and a cheaper option (you might recognize the same set of stones offered by several sellers in the $30 price range). The KDS stone feels much smoother than the $30 stone despite being a slightly higher grit (3000/8000). To be honest, I had a lot of fun learning how to sharpen knives. I spent several hours watching videos trying to master my technique. I started with KDS 1000, then KDS 6000, then my cheaper Stein 8000. I can't say I got razor sharp, but my knives were much easier and safer to use.
