Comparison of three children's microscopes Microscopes vary from time to time. When I bought them they were all under $20. Amscope: This microscope is practically useless. The optics are terrible. Nothing interesting can be seen even at minimum magnification. On the largest magnet, you're in luck if you can even find the "focal plane". There is also a lack of "light from above". It would be helpful for a curious child. It has two features: it comes with a carrying case and the microscope body is made of metal. The other two microscopes have plastic frames and do not come with a case. It's also the cheapest of the three, but saving $20 and getting a useless microscope doesn't seem like a big deal. Swift: Good bright and large field of view. The best of the three in that regard. But the increases don't go that high. Minor details are visible on EMERTH. Theoretically they would be visible on AmScope if the image quality was better than terrible. They shine both above and below the sample. The intensity is independently adjustable (good). The step on this scope is more difficult to set up. Focus the image and release the grip. The table "relaxes" in the new position and the image is blurred. A little tweaking will sharpen the image, but this is not necessary and can be frustrating for the child. Not sure about Swift's overall increase. Lenses are labeled as 60X, 120X, and 200X. Actual magnifications appear higher, although not as high as the other two. I see the argument that this microscope is the best of the three. Due to the larger and brighter field of view, however, the highest magnification in the Swift. not enough The frame is made of plastic. Without case. EMERTH: Fairly bright images. Decent field of view. The lens bodies are metal, the other two have plastic bodies. This microscope also comes with two eyepieces, one 10X and the other 25X. Swap them out for a different look very quickly. Switch to (1) Light Down, (2) Light Up, (3) Both. Intensity is adjustable but not independent up/down. The frame is made of plastic. No business. The instructions said "Use the dust cover provided by the microscope manufacturer." to protect the eyepiece, but the dust cover was not included. This is the best of the three. Even at maximum magnification, the image is clear and bright enough. It's also the most expensive of the three.
