Simple, I would call it weatherproof when not in use.

Nice and simple, does the job. There is no internal weather shield or cover to cover the cable. I would be skeptical about using this in heavy rain. When closed it seems to hold up pretty well against rain, but I wouldn't install it anywhere it's going to rain or face the front of a vehicle or van. . Came with no instructions and I had to triple check which wire goes where. Didn't say what size hole saw or anything like that.
