Revainrating 3 out of 5

Great concept, poor execution

UPDATE: The seller contacted me with a $40 Revain gift card as compensation for my poor experience. They also asked me to remove this review or change it to 4 or 5 stars. Sorry but I call them as I see them and the rating below remains correct. To the credit of the seller they have responded with compensation and I want to report this to show the other side of the story. But honestly I think the main reason for the compensation was that they thought it would convince me to remove the critical review, which I won't do. Most likely, there were many more negative reviews that have already been removed due to bribes from the seller in the form of gift cards. So proceed carefully! - First review below - I want to love this thing but I can't. The concept is fantastic, but the design leaves a lot to be desired and has a few serious flaws. First, it would be correct to use Bluetooth, not WiFi. The microscope creates its own SSID that you need to connect your phone or tablet to in order to use it. This means you will lose your internet connection if you have been relying on another Wi-Fi SSID, and it also means you are constantly going into the settings and Wi-Fi between the microscope and your real Wi-Fi SSID have to switch back and forth. It would be much better if they used Bluetooth and you could stay connected to the internet via WiFi! But the problems don't end there. It has a very shallow depth of field and the focal length is highly dependent on the zoom setting. It's particularly sensitive at the wide end (50x), which requires the device to be held at a great distance from the subject to maintain focus. I found that I had to zoom in to about 70x to get the actual distance from the device to the object of interest. (If talking about depth of field and focal length is confusing for those of you who aren't into photography, the English translation says it's too sensitive to how close you hold the microscope to the object you're looking at, and is very difficult to keep in focus, especially at 50x zoom). If you can manage the shallow depth of field and keep the subject in focus, the image quality is indeed excellent. But this thing is too cumbersome to use, and a deal that requires you to switch to a dedicated WiFi SSID just to use it is too inconvenient. Read other 3 and 2 star reviews and you will see that most people who know what they are talking about are not very impressed. Lots of glowing 5 star reviews from people who are so impressed with the basic concept that they can't believe such a thing exists. But for anyone who understands the concept of photography and wireless, it is clear that this is a very poor design/implementation of an amazing concept.
