The SRAM S300 system is worth every penny

I am very happy with this system. You're probably wondering if it's worth upgrading from your current set of square cranks. Let me tell you it's like night and day and worth every penny. This SRAM S300 is very well designed, well made, smooth and well balanced, very durable and not too heavy. I was particularly pleased that the chain of my bike's chain stayed perfectly flat after installation. The difference in ride quality between the S300 wedge drivetrain and the old-school square bevel drivetrain was immediately apparent. The sprocket nut/bolt is worth mentioning. You may have heard that the nuts/bolts appear to be glued in place and cannot be removed without drilling. Well, they're definitely in there and need to be drilled out. I tried to remove them properly with proper tools and even took them to a bike shop to see if they were luckier than me, but not in the bones; had to drill through so make sure you buy some extra sprocket bolts if you want to change the sprocket. Use a very large metal drill bit to remove all of the sprocket nut(s) from the back. This will likely damage the supplied chain and void any warranty, so drill at your own risk. Be sure to remove any metal shavings from the bearing surfaces prior to installation. Information that wasn't (at least not in my box): 1) The two small washers that come in the kit should be installed on the pedals to protect the crank. Lever due to damage to the pedal system. 2) You will need 10mm and 8mm hex bits (hex tool) to install the non-drive connecting rod. The tightening torque for the 8 mm connecting rod bolt is 48-54 Nm (35-39 ft-lbs). The metal cap that covers the connecting rod bolt has a 10mm allen key and it is enough to press it by hand. I recommend contacting your local bike shop if you do not have the correct installation tools and/or are unsure about installing the part. 3) Be sure to use bike or other good waterproof (marine) grease to mount the bottom bracket. Walmart sells decent marine lube.

Pros
  • Very impressive
Cons
  • I really don't like anything, everything is fine
