Review on The NEAT Glass Official Competition Judging Glass: Enhanced 2-Pack for Clear-Cut Evaluation by Andrew Dickens

Excellent glass --- slightly different from Glen Cairn

I bought Glen Cairn glasses and then decided to try this one. This is an overview of the pros and cons of both. I am an old man and my sense of smell has greatly diminished. I liked the claim of these two glasses to "concentrate" the aroma of expensive whiskey. With the Hollow Pyramid, this was achieved by using a wide bowl for good airflow and a much narrower top to allow the smell of alcohol to get into the nose. For that it works fine. A decent glass also has a wide bowl, but not a narrower chimney. This also means that the taste is not concentrated. The benefit of a decent glass is that because of its shape, it presses your nose against the glass when you swallow, so you sort of smell more flavor as you drink. It's also more comfortable in the hand and I like the wide lip for drinking. If you have a good nose, you will probably prefer this glass. My friend who does this finds the concentrating effect of the hollow pyramid to be a bit stronger, but I think you could just hold it back a bit. Glen Cairn is also less than half the price. The neat glass seems a lot stronger, although I haven't had any issues with it in dw. I will most likely use a clean glass for daily drinking and a clay pyramid for "testing". In all likelihood for frequent testing.
