My old Topeak percussion pump is worn out. I decided that a Sram/RockShox branded pump would be a good option for my RockShox fork and shock (for no good reason other than the name). I used it right out of the box last fall when I rebuilt the shock and fork. Wasn't very happy with how it worked at the time but was functional enough to get the job done. Bought a new bike over the weekend and spent the last evening adjusting the air pressure to set the sag. This pump is worse than I remember from last fall. If you connect a shock you will not get an inaccurate reading as the pressure from the shock will fill the rubber line on the pump. You never know where you've actually started until you decide whether to increase or decrease the pressure. You will then get inaccurate readings due to the flexible rubber air line as some of the pressure is lost when the rubber hose is bent and stretched. The manometer on the pump is not to be trusted. I pumped up the rear shock to 200psi. Got on the bike to check the sag. Too soft. Reconnected the pump, reduced the pressure to 160psi without intentionally venting air. Got it pumped up to 220psi. I checked the sag again. Reconnect the pump and it will read 190psi. Got it pumped up to 250psi. Checked the sag. Ideal. I used my digital tire gauge to confirm the pressure was 0.216psi. The same happened with the front fork. Pumped it up to 100psi. Checked the sag. Too soft. Plug in the pump and it's 80psi. It ended up inflating to 120psi to get a final reading of 85psi with a digital gauge when the sag was correct. Also, the pressure relief valve is stuck. It seems that there is no reliable position where you are guaranteed to deflate. I squeeze, the air comes out quickly, but then stops. I didn't open the valve. It should still bleed air, but it doesn't. Push it all the way in, which should be wide open, and no air will come out. How to slowly release air for fine tuning when the bleed valve is intermittent? I never realized the utility of this ritual attachment at the end of a Topeak pump. This allows you to adjust the pressure and close the schrader valve before shutting down the pump and completely losing air pressure in the line. I'm going to throw this RockShox pump in the trash and buy another Topeak pump.
