
This thing is a SAFETY. I make chef's knives, I constantly check the thickness of the blades at all kinds of points, both along the edge and in the middle of the blade. I gotta tell you, there's "more" to the world of knives than you think. I used traditional locksmith tools: mostly digital calipers; sometimes a micrometer, but a reading of say 1cm from the rim is not possible with a caliper (because the rim is thicker), and with a micrometer this is a problem. Now, with THIS suction cup, just pinch it where you want to read it and pop it. Lasts a second. And if you want to FIND a specific thickness along a variable line, just plot it until you get a reading - you just can't do it that easily with a micrometer, and you can't do it at all with a digital/vernier caliper. This works great and reads fairly accurately as far as I can tell by comparing it to my other precision tools and parts of known thickness. holding a knife in the left hand and squeezing the measuring tentacles with the right, requiring a third hand to press the "Hold" button. Undoubtedly, moving it from the motherboard to the front increases the cost. Also, pressing the hold button, even if you have a fixed workpiece, can shift the measurement. It's more of an SOP to just remember the measurement for the few seconds it takes to write it down. :-)
