I paid less than $7 for this item and it has revolutionized my cable work - seriously. The components are plastic, but I've used up to 16 gauge copper wire with no problems. This allows one person to make suitable earring base molds in minutes, a task that used to take a long time, especially since I'm such a perfectionist. Each mandrel is designed in such a way that the lower part can be divided into four mandrels. I wish this piece had a flat bottom, but that's just my personal preference. I've numbered the steps on each mandrel to make it easier to keep track of which step I'm using, especially when making the right components. The mandrels also make grinding easier as they provide a base to work with as you twist the wire. I thought the plastic might be too brittle to handle the tension I put on it while winding the wire, but to date I've had no problems.
