I used dark brown. My hair started with about 1/2 inch of my natural hair level 5 with a hint of gray, a few inches of faded hair level 6 with a hint of gray and the ends were dyed dark and faded to about level 5. To apply, I stood in my bathtub with a mirror hanging from my shower curtain rod and several garbage bags covering the surfaces. I picked up the henna with my gloved hand and sort of smudged it. It doesn't have the slippage and spread that regular hair dye has, so I wish I had used a rattail comb or other separating device. The app was simple and therefore clean. I left it on under a shower cap for 4 hours before rinsing off and applying conditioner. Right after this my hair looked almost black but in the after photos you can see that it faded to a very natural dark brown color after one wash. My gray hair is completely gone! My hair was already in good condition so I didn't see any improvement but it is shiny, thick and very natural looking. I will definitely use it again!
