I only use the optical output. It works well.
While all Squeezeboxes in the world are slowly breaking and repairs are very hard to come by (I found a guy in Canada who will try), I needed a solution to replace mine. This and the Raspberry Pi with piCore give you a headless squeeze box. It's a working solution for those of us who don't want to switch to new music software, and it works well.
