I was really surprised at how gentle you have to be when inserting the bottom handle into the carpet. I followed the instructions exactly and used my foot to drive my claw into the carpet. I broke all spikes this way. I had two left so I read through here and did what others have said: carefully put everything back in place but then unscrewed the lid, pushed the mat back and gave a light tap to press it very gently into the carpet . . Using a small hammer, I tapped each leg of the claw and slowly lowered it into the carpet. I never heard a click when it engaged, but they go rock hard and hold in place, and I don't think a single prong broke the second time around. Then I rolled the mat over it and screwed it on. Now they are securely installed and working great. It is very sad that I now have two useless claws and cannot put in another carpet. Maybe others will learn from my experience.
