. The laptop originally came with WIN 8 and has been upgraded to WIN 10 (a free Windows update that also gives you a new WIN 10 product key). It now boots and runs much faster thanks to the new 1TB SSD. That's how we did it. First, we unsuccessfully tried using the offline cloning feature with an old 750GB drive in slot "A" and a new 1TB raw drive in slot "B". We held the button down for 3 seconds until the 100% light came on and then went off, and then it just sat there doing nothing. It won't clone offline, and we suspect this was because the new drive wasn't formatted (although the instructions don't mention that it won't do an offline clone). However, this is not a problem and we were able to use 2 free downloads to get the job done. The first program was EASEUS Todo Backup Free which had a cloning feature and worked like clockwork. However, he cloned 750 GB to the new drive and left another 250 GB unallocated on the new drive. and therefore cannot be used. This took about 6 hours. Also, the drive itself had 3 partitions 1) System 2: main drive C (on which Windows 10 is installed) 3) HDDRECOVERY partition. And then another 250GB of unallocated space. And what we had to do was add those 250GB unallocated space to the C-Drive partition. And that's where MiniTool Partition Wizard Free came in. This allowed me to 1) delete the HDDRECOVERY partition from the new drive, 2) enlarge the C drive partition to include an additional 250GB, and then 3) copy the HDDRECOVERY partition from the old drive to the new one again (to the remaining ones unallocated space). at the end of the drive. NOTE: When you resize the C driver partition. MAKE SURE you leave slightly more unallocated space than the size of the HDDRECOVERY part. Because if you copy the partition again, it won't be if the new target drive has some more unallocated space. Finally: we just replaced the old drive in the laptop with a new one and voila! It boots faster. But he never did that for us. And when we checked the new drive, it showed that Windows was already activated. He never asked us for a product key. We recommend that you write down the product key beforehand as you may need to provide this information if you wish to update your drive. We think that WIN 10 might allow you 1 hard drive upgrade without a product key, but if you try again, a product key may be required. But we don't know exactly. just a guess on our part.
