Simple but effective!
For those long bursts of steam that you just don't want under the cupboard, simply slide in the other direction, whether to the exhaust fan or in the other direction. It can be a bit tricky at first, so you'll have to adjust it depending on the pot. If it's not quite right, the vent will continue to "air slightly". Don't give up because it will be worth it once you figure out where to sit.
