This toy is not safe. The lead test sticks turned bright red when touched where the paint (base metal) had chipped. This indicates a relatively high proportion of red. Light red strokes have dried on the paint of this toy. This indicates a lower concentration (probably closer to the test threshold, which is 600 ppm lead). Toys should not contain more than 90 ppm lead. This toy appears to be very heavy - I'm guessing it's made out of old-school pewter, pewter and lead. My guess is that the paint is either low in lead or the base metal has soaked the lead into the paint over time. Either way, it's definitely not safe for children. Shameful.
