I'm 32 and wasn't having fun in my 20's so I'm catching up. I wanted to do my second/third hole myself. It was an experience. The first hole I made I used an 18 although my earring ended up not fitting. I definitely wasn't thinking and didn't realize how much dirtier it would be to put on an earring after the needle was removed. I did this and there was blood and the earring didn't go in so smoothly. But it looked amazing and I was so pleased with myself that I decided to do the other side. I thought it best to go ahead and used 16 which fitted my earring very well. It didn't fit well so be careful it might fall out when you put it to your ear. It was a little more painful, but this time the bleeding was minimal. I've read online to use either a cork or bar of soap behind your ear while you push through the needle so you don't pierce your throat. I didn't have stoppers and the soap is big so I used toilet paper in a neat little ball to catch the needle on the other side. This worked well and had the added benefit of absorbency. Overall I'm very glad I did it myself and I can definitely see how I got carried away so I'll be relying on others to keep me from making more holes. in my body before they heal. To be honest, I probably won't feel the need to do anything drastic again until school summer break, so I should be fine. Good luck and stay healthy!
