Everything has to work PERFECTLY, be quiet.

I bought this for my 5.5 Betta aquarium after receiving a recommendation from a pet store and also reviews here. Noise = It's only quiet when you use it in a certain way. If you set the water flow to a low level, it's very noisy. Noise is caused by filter vibrations due to low water flow. The filter only regulates the incoming water, but does not reduce the power of the motor that pumps it out and therefore puts a load on the device. I've tried adjusting it and repositioning the filter in a number of ways, but the only way to keep this thing quiet is to keep the flow high and the filter full of water, which reduces vibration. Water level = The filter needs a full water level, ie exactly where the edge of the pool begins. If you prefer not to have a full water tank for fear of the betta jumping out (I don't have a lid) then again the filter will be very noisy with water splashing which will really annoy the betta. Filter Capacity = It comes with 2 sponges and there is some (not much space) for stuff if you want to put it in. You also need to position the sponges accurately as they are not the same size as the filter. Basically move it up so the water doesn't run over the sponges and pick up all the debris. The only way to get this to work for my little betta is to keep the current going full blast and keep my tank full of water. I had to add a lot of plants near the filter outlet (almost right where the water touches the plant) to reduce flow and splash. Luckily I have a 5.5 gallon tank so this is an acceptable compromise and my betta can swim in the other 2/3 of the tank. This probably won't work for a smaller tank as the current will drive the bettas away.
