I live in an area where there are frequent severe thunderstorms and the cable system often generates surges on the coax that not only fry the modem, it often drops ( routers, switches, etc. connected via Ethernet cable) in the network. That's a big problem, not to mention the high cost. The Solution: This kit and a short (2m) loop of fiberglass create an effective "air gap" that prevents those surges from hitting the rest of the gear. Media converters can burn out on their own, but it's cheaper than the rest of the hardware. It's completely plug and play between my cable modem and router.
