Scratches and Finds: CMHT77620 Stud Sensor Review + AC Detector

The Craftsman CMHT77620 Stud Sensor + AC Detector, made in China, measures 6" long, 3" wide and 3/4" thick. A Central hole on top allows you to mark what you need instead of removing the sensor and marks. Two AA batteries are included and easy to install. The sides have a cut-out for your fingers, and the power switch is located in the center. My index finger is about 3" long, which I think is typical for a tall man. The power button requires my finger to flex a bit, which is awkward when I put my fingers to the side where they think that they should be.. It would be more convenient to move the knob up half an inch. Instead, I keep the sides lower. By sliding the sensor along the wall, you can easily strom identify leading bolts and wires. Indicators include left and right arrows, center pin, power cord, and power. When the sensor moves slowly across the wall, the power indicator shows that the sensor is actively scanning. The left or right arrows will light up when near the center of the rack to indicate which direction to move. The rack center indicator will light up along with a beep when the center is found. The power cord indicator light will illuminate along with a repeating beep when power is detected in the wall. All of these functions work well and appear to be accurate. The underside of the sensor that rests against the wall is protected by a hard plastic sheet. My Zircon StudSensor is made of a soft cloth material that protects the wall. The Craftsman CMHT77620 Stud Gauge will scrape paint and texture off the wall and cause minor damage. It may not be noticeable if your walls are white and very noticeable if your walls are darker. Most likely, over time I will find a convenient way to use the sensor, but most likely I will buy an alternative that will be more convenient to use. However, a major concern for me is the ease with which this sensor will damage wall texture and finish. I'd recommend considering alternatives like the Zircon StudSensor, which will protect your walls while providing the information you need. ► BENEFITS: Detects to a maximum depth of 3/4"/19 mm Detects metal, wood and live wires Detects center pin 2 AA batteries included Limited lifetime warranty ► CONS: Damages walls/paint Inconvenient button placement
