Review on Flowtron FC-8800 Diplomat Fly Control Device - High-Powered 120-Watt Solution for Indoor and Outdoor Use by Brenda Garvin

Revainrating 4 out of 5

fiction . . . with a few caveats:

I actually waited to write a review until I'd used it for a while. I really like it and would recommend it. . . wouldn't give it 5 stars though (for pop up reasons). Pros: It's bright, I'd say 3-6 times brighter than any I've had in the past. It illuminates the entire area in front of my garage, but with a soft light rather than a regular spotlight. Although I bought the lantern outside the garage I never bothered to install it. It works. It's powerful, it attracts bugs (literally) for about a mile and slowly rids your entire range of bugs. Remember that any light from bugs won't kill bugs near you (and not instantly). You need to remove it from where you live, and it will take a few weeks before you start reducing the insect population. It attracts more flies than anything else, but then I apply Flowtron mosquito attractant to it to attract them too. Unfortunately, the stick sometimes hangs next to him to catch bugs and then gets electrocuted (something that big takes about 30 seconds) when he tries to catch one. You definitely hear all the bugs show up and I want to rejoice every time. :) I removed the bottom entirely so the bugs just fall into the grass where I installed it. The ants take care of them anyway and I don't have to climb the stairs to empty them every time. Cons: I assume it requires quite a bit of power, especially since it needs to be on 24/7. However, if you have such a powerful . . . You have to pay the price. This is not a design flaw, just a fact of life. Pears don't last very long. The first bulb went out after about 8 months, the rest soon followed. The biggest bummer (mainly because it meant pulling out a long ladder and lowering/disassembling it twice) was that all the ballasts failed at the same time. They're cheap as hell (under $8 and free shipping for 25 of them: Sunlite 37140-SU E740 FC8 Lamp FS22 Starter Fluorescent 25-pack (25-pack)), but that meant waiting a few more days and then to walk away. go through the same process a second time. I would recommend buying a box of 25 and only planning on replacing one at a time with each bulb change. I think this caused the ballasts to fall off and also caused the plastic on the ballasts to become brittle and make them want to fall apart when trying to remove them. . . another reason to replace them every time. So, finally, plan to replace the lamp ballasts, plan to replace the lamps at least once a year. . . and plan that all your mistakes will be destroyed in a satisfactory way.

Pros
  • Can be mounted vertically or horizontally; USDA and FDA Compliant
Cons
  • Big and Bulky
