Review on Swissmar 00453C Wing Corkscrew by Kurt Ferguson

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Swiss brand but light, thin hands and plastic body.

At a price of over $20 and a Swiss brand, I expected it to be made to Swiss standards: full metal forgings or stampings, heavy construction for durability. But no - this black case isn't powder-coated or oxide-treated metal: it's black thermoplastic resin. Not even fiberglass reinforced resin, just plain plastic, probably polyethylene. The shiny metal gears are die-cast from a non-ferrous metal, possibly aluminum, and are THIN. I didn't weigh the whole piece, but it shouldn't be more than 100-150 grams. If the handles are really flimsy, die-cast aluminum, I don't think they last more than 50-100 corks before breaking off, and possibly sooner. The only part of this tool that satisfies my needs is the corkscrew: steel, thick-walled and sharp, but everything else is junk.
