Review on πŸ” Azoo Mignon 150 Power Filter: Optimal Choice for Filter Efficiency by Alicia Moore

Great filter for nano aquariums.

This is a great little filter for nano aquariums when used properly. I use the Model 150 in a 2.5 gallon tank because I need a well-ventilated environment for the types of shrimp I keep. I originally had a Mignon 60 model and it seemed to clean quite well, but I needed the extra space for more biological filtration as my pH 6 water is quite soft. These tanks need a lot of filtration to keep the nitrogen cycle going. If you keep fish or regular cherry shrimp, this is not a problem. This filter will likely fit 5 to 7 gallon tanks. 10 liters is way too much in my opinion. There are a few "mods" for the filter material on YouTube, but be aware that this is a reverse flow HOB filter. In other words, stacking the sponges on top of each other, as with the Aquaclear, would render this filter virtually useless. I simply used the included sponge to create a template for my own sponges. There is a gap between the sponge and the bottom of the filter for a reason. First, I cut my foam a bit longer so that it fills the compartment from top to bottom, thinking water can't get through without going through the sponge first. While this is true, clogs occur much more quickly, especially when using dental floss pads. A gap under the jaws allows water to circulate without stagnating or overflowing two chambers or running over the jaws. I used this gap under these jaws to add a bit of ceramic material. I also filled the gap behind the two pads with the same ceramic. I was just careful not to climb over the baffle for the two pottery compartments. For the sponge I simply bought a 1 inch sheet of 30 ppi filter foam and cut it to size. I use it in all of my cooktops as it has the perfect pore size to allow water to pass through freely without clogging easily, yet thin enough to trap most organics. It also serves as a good surface for nitrifying bacteria to colonize. There really is no need for ceramic media, especially in tanks with mature plants, but I had plenty of these in my other tanks so I decided to use them to ""seed" the new filters I also use the included pre-filter sponge due to the small size of the shrimp, this acts as another form of media to collect beneficial bacteria as well as filtering out larger particles of plant matter, dirt etc. Combined with 30ppi foam, the filter thread can easily be a week or two before it needs to be cleaned/replaced so I only have a 3 stage mechanical/biological filter My water is crystal clear and smells like fresh earth (aerobic bacteria) so it's doing its job well .
