We had a burnt rubber smell in the cabin and code P0028 on our 2008 Subaru Legacy 4cyl. Plumes of smoke formed under the hood around the oil filler neck. I've searched various forums for a problem and it was suggested to change this sensor. Bought two because after the failure of the first, the second is due to fail soon. Both are easily replaced with a 24mm deep drill socket, a 6-8" extension, a ratchet and some threadlock. DO NOT OVERLOAD! They use tapered pipe threads and do not screw the sensor flush to the block. Sensor or hack the part of the block it will screw into, be careful. This is an easy home repair, just don't go crazy tightening it. .P0026 - Passenger side next to firewall (rear of engine).
