This device combines an inclinometer and a laser range finder that supports simple distance measurements, true horizontal distance measurements and (usually tree) height measurements. The device is easy to use and also offers a logging function that records measurements for later transcription. I've used it to predict the range of fallen trees, record tree heights for a forest management plan, and measure distances between posts and even rocks from a racing sailboat. It's somewhat waterproof, so it can be used in rain, splashes, etc. It does exactly what it says on the tin, accuracy at close range is as advertised (I don't have any tests for more than 100 feet) and the user interface is easy to learn to use. The only difficulty I had was holding it steady enough to take measurements on smaller objects (T-posts, narrow, very tall tree); a longer device or bracket can make this task easier. Retries are usually successful, and missed measurements do not interrupt the tree height measurement sequence.
