Review on πŸ”Œ Fieldpiece HS36: Versatile True RMS Stick Multimeter - Expandable with Backlight by Malik Axmed

Phantom open circuit voltage measurements can be misleading.

I've been using this thing as an HVAC/R service technician for two years now. As others have said, when you test an open circuit the meter gives you random numbers as if it were catching voltage. Otherwise it is an accurate meter. There have been times when I've searched for 24 volts and it came up with a number that was close to what I was looking for. If you're not paying close attention, it can really confuse you in diagnostic work. At the bottom of the screen is a bar (I don't know what it's called) that goes up with the best "signal": if it barely registers, it's phantom power. about 50% or more, that's definitely right. If the voltage is high enough, you will also get a red light and hissing (high voltage warning) to let you know you have voltage and the numbers on the screen are correct. Additionally, I've also found that every person I've ever allowed to use my meter is also confused. "Here 100V". no no power. You must learn to read this meter. I've learned to understand well what he tells me and I can trust him. The other eye group will look at the meter reading. I've definitely pulled out another meter on many occasions, especially on low voltage stuff. Also, after 2 years, my amp clamp no longer works. I'm not sure if it's a meter or a clamp, but it's giving me insanely high current readings. Although it's been two years. When the time comes for a new counter I will buy something else. Personally, I would reject this meter.

Pros
  • The HS36 works with all optional Fieldpieces, allowing the user to test a wider range of parameters with a single gauge.
Cons
  • No machine
