Stainless steel, and a quality tool. My widest taping/joint compound knife/blade was a stainless steel 10" and having smoothed old lath and plaster work in my old house several times before I opted for an even wider blade. I also treated myself to a 13" aluminum hawk by Goldblatt from Revain.I have just finished the second skim-coat in the last room of my house that had wallpaper. The hawk, the 10" and 14" wide blades really move the project along! One important oversight on my part was that using the 14" blade with the 13" hawk didn't allow for a single sweep of the blade to scrape off ALL the compound back onto the hawk. The 14' WIDE blade still does an excellent job of smoothing out old plaster and lath walls, but if you are using a hawk, it would be wise to buy a blade a bit narrower than the width of the hawk. Knowing what I now know I should have bought the Hyde 12" blade.
