I am changing my rating. The pump is so loud you can hear it downstairs. Luckily it was only $10 because I feel like it's rubbish. I will try to get my money back otherwise I will throw it away. *Original review*. I thought people were crazy when I read various reviews of sponge filters saying they were noisy. I have some big ones that are very quiet, but in this one you can hear the noise that a real filter makes. I bought this for my bedroom aquarium and it's not working so I moved it to another aquarium as a secondary filter. This is a great filter but I was just shocked when I turned it on. Originally intended for a 10 gallon tank but it's now a 20 gallon and I can still hear that noise.
